Become a Voter

Becoming a voter for the Hampton Roads Achievement in Community Theater Awards is easy – all you have to do is attend lots of community theater in Hampton Roads!  To ensure our voters are informed, we do require each voter to attend a certain number of plays, and, based on the number they attend, they get a certain weight to their votes.  Specifically…

  • If you attend at least 50% minus one of the plays up for award consideration during the current year, you will get one first place vote, worth one point, for each category.
  • If you attend at least 75% minus one of the plays up for award consideration during the current year, you will get one first place vote worth three points, and one second place vote worth one point, for each category.
  • If you attend at least 100% minus one of the plays up for award consideration during the current year, you will get one first place vote worth five points, one second place vote worth three points, and one third place vote worth one point, for each category.

For example, in a year that there are 29 plays up for award consideration, you would need to attend…

  • At least 14 plays to be in the 50% category (29 * 50% = 14.5 – 1 = 13.5, so you would need to see 14 plays to meet or surpass the 13.5 required),
  • At least 21 plays to be in the 75% category (29 * 75% = 21.75 – 1 = 20.75, so you would need to see 21 plays to meet or surpass the 20.75 required),
  • At least 28 plays to be in the 100% category (29 * 100% = 29 – 1 = 28, so you would need to see 28 plays to meet or surpass the 28 required).

If you would like to be voter, please email HRACTAwards@gmail.com by June 1st of the year in which you wish to vote during.  We will require some form of evidence of your attendance, whether that be playbills, ticket stubs, pictures, or receipts.

If you meet the requirements to be a voter, we will provide you with a ballot on which to indicate your votes soon after the final eligible performance closes.  The ballot will consist of up to five nominees in each category, which will be determined through discussions amongst contributing writers of the HRACT Awards website who also meet the qualifications of the 100% voting category.
